The cold weather wasn’t enough to keep the Cape Town contestants away from the second round of theatre auditions of the reality show, SA’s Got Talent, which premiers on e.tv on Thursday, 30 August at 8:30PM.
The Cape Town leg of the SA’s Got talent Theatre auditions took place over two days, from Saturday, 4 August to Sunday 5 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. While some hopefuls did not do enough to impress the judges, various acts such as the 21- year-old opera- and the 50-year old jazzy-blues singers both from the Cape Flats got a huge applause from the judges and audience members.
Shado Twala, Ian von Memerty and Kabelo “Bouga Luv” Mabalane were blown away not by the South Easter, but by the talent that Cape Town contestants brought to the stage.
At the end of the first day of the auditions there were highs, lows, and in true Cape Town style, a few acts were only unique to the Mother City. One of these acts was from Marshall, a shelf packer from Kewtown on the Flats. Donned with a blonde wig and a painted face, Marshall had the audience in stitches with his rap and dance moves. Shado says an act like Marshall’s, you’ll only find in Cape Town, while Ian called Marshall a ‘malkop’ and Kabelo described his performance as weird. A comedian who calls himself Timmy wasn’t short of jokes when he told judges that ‘people laugh with him as well as at him’. Timmy who teaches drama at his ex-school in Athlone proudly told the judges that even though he was one of the naughty ones at school, he ‘left the school as a pupil and returned as a teacher’ where after Ian joked that he would be worried if his child gets a drama lesson from the funny man.
Off the cuff performances include the drag queen act from X-Pose and a Melbuorne Shuffle act from Lance who stopped in the middle of his performance to remove his pants.
The Cape Town auditions weren’t short of any drama either. Emotions ran high as performers came on stage. 50-year old Bernie wowed with ‘My Baby Don’t Care’ and 42-year-old stay-at-home mom, Grace’s jazzy voice wowed all three judges. Eleven-year-old, contemporary dancer, Skye left the stage in tears after she got three yesses from the judges. Another contemporary dancer Nathan, who is also a rugby prop was crying when Shado told him that she could feel his passion and love for dancing but he was just not ready for the show. The main member of the formation group, the Eagle Eye Drilling Squad from Mitchells Plain was sobbing when the judges commended him for keeping his group disciplined and off the streets. Unemployed Celeste from Strandfontein gave a powerful rendition of ‘Big Spender’, which left the judges breathless and Ian describing her voice as a ‘Knockout, powerhouse, 16-carat golden voice’.
