Springbok star Schalk Burger’s wedding in Wellington was tainted by fighting between family members over the weekend.
The fight ended in the rugby player’s uncle Paul staying away from the celebrations after a feud with Schalk’s father, Schalk Burger snr, turned nasty.
While tension has been evident for some time between the siblings, things took a turn for the worse when Schalk snr attack Paul with a table, leading to an interim protection order being taken out by Paul against his brother.
“I sat on the porch and drank coffee when he and Myra (Schalk snr’s wife) drove past and stopped when they saw me. Schalk got out and said he tried to contact me, but that I ignored him,” Paul told Rapport.
“I told him he could not hurt, hit or terrorise me. It was then that he flipped the table onto me. He threw it against my stomach and chest. Other people saw it happen.
“Schalk alleges that he ‘gently pushed’ the table, but he threw it onto me. He attacked me physically – I feel I should be protected against him. Myra saw it all.”
As a result of the issues within the family, Burger’s wedding was marred due to the strong bond with he has with his uncle.
