Local rapper Slikour remains defiant in the face of criticism of his controversial song, ”Blacks are Fools”.

According to the Saturday Star, the musician, whose real name is Siya Metane, has refused to remove the song from the internet after he released it free on-line in March.

In addition to the usual grumblings, the rapper has also received numerous threats on his life as part of an extended backlash against what some feel are racist sentiments in the song.

Complainants have taken specific issue with a section of the song where Slikour sings: ”Coz blacks are fools. They just wanna be fresh, and they wanna be cool, give them a little money and they think they rule. But I hope we better than that.”

According to the Star, the divisive tune has been downloaded 15,631 times.

Metane told the paper that he has no regrets, and that his intentions have been misunderstood.

“I believe I’m talking for the generation of today and tomorrow. I’m also not perfect…At the end of the day we are all accountable for where this country is going,” he said.

“I think there’s a minority that’s tied up on the title and not the content.”

Several prominent local politicians have felt moved to weigh in on the matter.

DA leader Helen Zille said: “The title is very provocative and I don’t agree with the gross generalisation it makes with reference to black people.

“It is wrong to generalise about any group, there are wise people and fools in every group.”

While United Democratic Front leader Bantu Holomisa was more scathing in his condemnation of the song: “He should withdraw the song and apologise to avoid having people go to the Human Rights Commission to complain.”
