Over three thousand roses, a thousand chocolates, hundreds of miniature South African flags, familiar faces and lots of love. That’s what thousands of Johannesburg motorists experienced on Tuesday morning at one of the country’s busiest intersections.

Several local celebrities – including DJ Sbu, Kabelo Mabalane, Danny K, Melinda Bam (Miss South Africa) and Celeste Khumalo (Miss SA Teen) – joined Proudly South African to distribute the roses, chocolates and flags to motorists on the corners of William Nicol and Sandton Drives.

The theme was “Show your Love for South Africa – Support Local to Create Jobs”. Proudly SA promotes “buying local” to help create jobs and encourages national unity, pride and patriotism.

The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Thandi Vivian Tobias-Pokolo, also joined the celebrities to spread the word about the importance of “supporting local to help create jobs”.

The Valentine’s Day drive was well received by motorists. Many were surprised to see the well-known personalities during peak traffic and were delighted to receive a Proudly South African Valentine’s day gift.

“Today was about showing love for South Africa and our fellow South Africans. If we unite and support local products and services, we will contribute towards an environment conducive for job creation. This is how we can show our love for our country on a practical level,” said Proudly SA CEO, Leslie Sedibe.
