Singer-Silhouette - Gallo Images“Dreamgirls”, a musical that has been hailed as one of the best staged in South Africa –ever –has had to cancel its run in Cape Town.

The show, which was scheduled to begin on June 8 this year at the Artscape Theatre, saw the entire season in the mother city cancelled.

The reason for cancelling? It appears that people didn’t actually want to see it. “Poor public support” has been blamed for the cancellation, and the show’s producer Hazel Feldman has expressed regret at disappointing patrons in Cape Town who had purchased tickets for the show.

It appears that South Africans would rather watch Smokie than a musical, but it might be that they were disappointed to find that Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson weren’t in the starring roles.

  1. Cape Town, shame on you! Smokie? For heaven’s sake. What is it with CT and old has-beens? USA will never support SA artists again. SA you had an opportunity to be acknowledged in the biggest international music arena…and you blew it…for never-mores, like SMOKIE, NEIL DIAMOND (60000+ crowd support at Greenpoint stadium a few weeks ago)! SHAME ON YOU!
