One person has died as a result of injuries sustained when temporary scaffolding collapsed at a concert at the Cape Town Stadium due to high winds, the city said on Thursday.
“One person passed away last night as a result of injuries. It was a female individual. She passed away after she was taken to hospital,” said city spokeswoman Kylie Hatton.
It is believed that the woman passed away at nearby Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital.
Nineteen people have been left injured by the accident with 12 requiring hospitalisation.
Hatton said the site has been secured for an investigation by the police.
She said the city and event organisers will cooperate with the investigation.
The temporary structure was a “branding activation” and located next to the stadium forecourt on the Cape Town CBD side of the venue.
The structure had been pre-approved and certified as safe before the event.
American rock band Linkin Park were scheduled to perform at the stadium.
The band took to their Facebook page to post the following:
“Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue.
We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries.
Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy.”
