Mzansi Magic’s new singing competition Clash of the Choirs SA has already appointed six high-profile choir masters to lead choirs from different regions to become South Africa’s coolest singing ensemble.
The impressive list includes Zakes Bantwini, Zwai Bala, Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa, Judith Sephuma, Thembi Seete and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse.
To top it off, Clash of the Choirs now struck a deal with legendary songstress Winnie Khumalo. She will be selecting the 20-piece choir for the Western Cape auditions.
The auditions will take place on Friday, 21 December and Saturday, 22 December at Roodebloem Studios, 43 Roodebloem Road, Woodstock between 08:00 and 18:00 on both days.
Mentored by the legendary late Brenda Fassie, Winnie has been in the music industry since she was 15 years old; with popular chart topping hits namely, “I wanna live my life” which was nominated for the Channel O award in 2009.
“I’m so excited about being a choir master for Cape Town, my mentor Brenda Fassie’s hometown. I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience. I believe there is a lot of talent in Cape Town and I can’t wait to put together a choir that will best represent the greatest voices of all,” says Khumalo.
For the auditions, contestants have to prepare a song in any music genre – from pop and R&B to Gospel, Soul or Kwaito and perform it in a choral formation. Choirs can audition as a group, but as the choir masters are tasked to set up their own choirs, only individuals within the choir might make the cut.
To avoid queues, hopefuls should go to the auditions as early as possible and bring along their ID books to prove that they’re older than 18. You can also download audition forms and pre-register at www.mzansimagic.tv to speed up the process on the day of auditions.
