Benni McCarthy mum on Tokelo Rantie omission

Cape Town City coach, Benni McCarthy has revealed that the club’s management is behind the decision to exclude Bafana Bafana and former English premier league and Turkish league striker, Tokelo Rantie from his team.

Rantie joined the Cape club in September, following his stint with Genclerbirligi of Turkey. McCarthy said he had nothing to do with the exclusion, adding that his management had its own reasons.

“Ask the team management. It’s more than just football in this whole thing and I think the club is in a better position to speak about it because I only focus on the team and the training every day. Yes, he trains everyday but it goes deeper than just football. I think there are a lot of personal issues behind the whole issue. The player is fit and trains every day with the rest of the team,” said Benni, during SABC 1’s Sport @10 programme on Wednesday night.

Rantie had not played football for a year before joining City in September, after quitting his former club Genclerbirligi in Turkey. In October, he was forced to sit out on the terraces after suffering a rib injury during training following a hard tackle with defender Tareeq Fielies.

Rantie (27) broke into the Absa Premiership in the 2011/12 season with Orlando Pirates, where he formed a lethal partnership with McCarthy before he moved to Sweden, where he won the title with Malmo and then made a club record signing move to English club Bournemouth. From England, he then joined Genclerbirligi in Turkey.
