Cassper Nyovest calls the SAMAs trash

Speaking at a press briefing following the announcement of the 2018 BET Awards nominees, South African rapper Cassper Nyovest indicated that he is over the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and most other local awards shows.

When asked about his beef with the SAMAs and why he places so much prestige on international awards, Nyovest stated that he had been involved in what has felt like a fruitless and endless back and forth with the awards show that caused him to lose faith in their credibility.

A post shared by ZAlebs (@zalebs) on

"I can't submit to the SAMAs every year when I don't understand them. Nobody had ever answered us. We keep submitting just to say "ah, F the SAMAs," but we keep submitting. So, for me, I was know? When I thought about it, I don't really need the SAMAs you know, they don't take me anywhere, they don't expose me to anybody..." said Nyovest. Before adding, right at the end "the SAMAs are trash though!"

Although the SAMAs are taking place in the first weekend of June, Nyovest will instead be heading to the United States for the 2018 BET Awards in which he is nominated in the best international act category alongside SA's own, Distruction Boyz as well as acts like Stormzy, Steff London, Davido, Tiwa Savage and Fally Ipupa to name a few.

In a BET Awards first, the top nominees from Africa and Europe (as voted for by an academy of industry experts) will now compete for the Best International Act category AND the winner of the said award will get the chance to be honored on stage during the main show.

This follows a boycott of the ceremony by a number of artists who did not appreciate the fact that they were handed their award either in a closed, non-broadcast ceremony or backstage during the main show.

One of the first artists to voice their frustration was former nominee, Fuse ODG, who tweeted “Dear @BET, the reason why I didn’t come is because you give our awards backstage! You have no respect for our hard work and achievements.”

His sentiments were echoed by Nigerian superstar, Wizkid, who also posted “lol So I’m hearing BET is mad cos I didn’t come for the pre shows and interviews! Lol... I love u all for what u do for black entertainment worldwide. I respect the fact u guys do this every year.I know it’s not easy. I understand...But I won’t be attending ur preshows and nominee parties if I’m getting the award at 10am before the main show. Same reason I didn’t come backstage to pick up the award when I won the first time.”

Wizkid's fellow Nigerian, Yemi Alade, added her voice to the convesation, stating, “why on Earth is the Africa category held hours before the main event? If African artists are not worthy in your sight. Pls by all means delete, cancel, omit the best international act africa category from this glorified award.”

And so BET has heeded their calls and will now do right by international artists...

“We are excited that the Best International Award will be presented on-stage during the live broadcast. The inclusion of the award in the main show signals the influence of international artists globally,” commented Alex Okosi, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa and BET International.

If only the SAMAs could also take a moment to re-evaluate their process based on statements from a large number of artists such as AKA, Cassper Nyovest and Papa Penny

Fans will be able to cast their vote for their favourite Best International Act nominees beginning today on the BET website and on both Twitter and Instagram @BET_Africa @BET_TV_FR @BET_Intl using each artist’s designated hashtag as explained by the video below:
