Even though most cultures in Africa associate snakes with evil and the ownership of a snake
with witchcraft and black magic, this superstition hasn’t stopped some prominent
personalities in South Africa from proudly owning the slithering reptiles.
One of such public figures who owns several snakes is reality star Lee Ann Gogo Maweni
Makopo, who is also known as Gogo Maweni.
Gogo Maweni is a controversial sangoma from Sandton Gauteng who stars in the reality show
Izangoma Zodumo.

Gogo Maweni’s snakes
Gogo Maweni is the proud owner of at least five snakes with the names of three of her
snakes- Kaddafi, Escobar and Zara publicly known. In one of the episodes of her reality
show, Gogo Maweni explained that she loved animals and that her snakes were just pets.
The sangoma is not afraid of showing off her love for her unusual pets and she often shares
photos of herself with either one of her snakes around her neck.
Although Gogo Maweni has often distanced herself from the popular notion that people who
own snakes use them for their “wealth-giving” abilities, a recent Instagram video of the
reality star using one of her snakes in one of her rituals with the snake lying in a pile of
coins at some point in the video.
The video left her fans confused and they took to the comments to express their confusion
with a couple of her fans asking what the snake was doing in the Ndumba if at all
the snake was just a pet.
Responding to one of her fans, Gogo Maweni confirmed that the snake was just a pet and told
the fan to relax.

Gogo Maweni’s snake’s sickness
Some time back in April 2022, one of Gogo Maweni’s snakes caused an uproar online after Maweni revealed that the snake had caught the flu.
Shared a short clip of the snake which she identified as Escobar undergoing a check-up as
the vet held it. She also shared a receipt of the medical bill for her snake.
The fact that Gogo Maweni spent over R 1000 to treat her snake and that unbeknownst to many
snakes suffer from flu made Gogo Maweni and her snakes a topic of discussion for a couple of
days.
Gogo Maweni’s other exotic pets
Besides Gogo
Maweni’s snakes, other exotic pets that are owned by the outspoken reality
television star include rats, an owl and rabbits.
During an episode of
Podcast and Chill with Mac G, Gogo Maweni disclosed that her house was full
of animals and she owned five snakes, one owl, two rabbits and we have two tortoises
and three beautiful dogs.
She also verified during the podcast that she didn’t use her animals for anything. This was
in reference to the long-standing allegations that her odd pets were used in her
rituals.
