The exhaustive attempts of murder convicted Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye continued on Tuesday when his legal team once again requested that he be granted bail.

According to the Sowetan, the hip hop artist’s lawyers told the Johannesburg High Court that their client should be granted bail pending his conviction appeal, which is expected to take place between April and June 2014. Following three failed applications for bail, Tuesdays’ court appearance was his second attempt to appeal the refusal of bail.

Jub Jub’s lawyer, Willie Vermeulen, reportedly “tried to convince Judge Natvarlal Ranchod” that it’s very likely that his client’s 25 year prison sentence would be overturned because Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi  “misdirected himself” when he convicted Maarohanye of murder.

Vermeulen reportedly argued that the attempted murder conviction that was handed down should have been one of reckless endangerment, adding that the evidence for the drug and alcohol charges was too weak to justify conviction.

In his rebuttal prosecutor Raymond Mathenjwa pleaded with the court “not to entertain [Maarohanye’s] desire to get respite from prison and escape the grasp of the law”, and said that the verdict handed down by Magistrate Nemavhidi was, in fact, lenient.

Jub Jub will learn the outcome of this appeal against the refusal of bail on Thursday.
