While most of y'all were taking part in the latest edition of AKA vs Cassper (yup, this beef popped off again this weekend) other musicians were onto bigger things this past weekend. KZN superstar Khuzani made history on Saturday evening when he became the first ever Maskandi artist to perform a sold-out one man show at Moses Mabhida stadium.
The singer has been promoting his show, Gcwalisa iMabhida for the last few weeks and on Saturday he saw his vision come to life as thousands of maskandi fans filled up the Durban-based stadium.
Khuzani became the second artist in the space of three months to fill up the World-Cup-2010-Venue after Cassper Nyovest hosted a successful #FillUp concert in December. The rapper shared some praise for the Maskandi artist's achievement. As someone who had to work hard to fill up the stadium himself, we're certain Nyovest knows what it takes to put a show like this together.
The timeline was full of respect for Khuzani after the massive achievement. While other mainstream genres such as hip hop, house, and in recent years gqom get the airplay on the MTVs and Traces of this world, it's worth remembering that these are not the only music genres that exist in South Africa.
Gcwalisa iMabhida was testament of just how important maskandi is as a South African music genre. We know he has a strong fanbase, but to see the support that Khuzani was able to generate will only inspire other artists in his genre to push for historic achievements.
Who knows if we will ever see a maskandi concert of this magnitude in the future? All we know is that Khuzani has reminded us that our dreams are valid as long as we go for them.
Now, should Khuzani try to "Gcwalisa" any of South Africa's other big stadiums?
