Industry mourns Koyo Bala at memorial service

Friends and family gathered at Bassline in Newton, Johannesburg, for the memorial service of musician Koyo Bala, who passed away last week

A number of entertainers, who were friends with the 3Sum member, joined the packed service on Tuesday.

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema also attended, and paid tribute to the singer during a speech.

He praised the openly gay singer for not being ashamed of who he was, adding that his friends and family were not ashamed to be associated with him, despite the judgement the singer received for his lifestyle.

Remaining 3Sum member, Amstel Maboa, also paid an emotional tribute to his friend.

Other stars in attendance were Kelly Khumalo, Somizi, and Dr Malinga.

Koyo died at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Monday, 7 March, after a long battle with cancer.

Fans were shocked to hear of the 37-year-old’s death, as a week earlier he had been seen out and about enjoying time with his friends, and even attended the Metro FM Music Awards.

A funeral service will be held for Koyo in Cape Town on Saturday, 19 March.
