News of Mary Makgatho's death broke on Monday morning after Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa took to Twitter to convey his condolences to her family following her passing, early this morning.

According to reports, Makgatho fell a few weeks ago and has been in hospital since 10 July. News which her casting manager, Carlynn de Waal-Smit, confirmed to Times Live. "It's true I just got off the phone with her sister Rose, who confirmed that she passed away. Mary was admitted into high care on 10 July after injuring herself after she fell," said de Waal-Smit.
She is known for her roles in productions such as Yizo Yizo‚ Generations and Rhythm City.
