Veteran Mzansi actress, Nomhle Nkonyeni, passed away in the early morning hours of the morning.

The award-winning 77-year-old has been in hospital since Friday, 5 July, and her nephew, confirmed that she has died, according to Herald Live.

Nkonyeni is a greatly-admired woman, not only for her acting but also for the many things she did for others, and will be sorely missed.

Earlier this year, Nkonyeni was among recipients of the Order of Ikhamanga, which recognizes South Africans who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport and just a month ago, Aggrey Road in New Brighton - where she was born - was renamed after her, and she was very happy with this honour.

Nkonyeni has been in numerous television and stage productions, such as Scandal!, Igazi, and Gaz’lam, and the film Red Dust. She received the lifetime achievement honour at the SA Film and Television Awards in 2016 and was also recognized in the same category at the 2018 Eastern Cape cultural awards.

Nkonyeni was also actively involved in the development and sustainability of the performing arts, helping to start the Outreach Theatre for Education Programme as well as in mentoring and educating young people in the arts.

Her belief in education saw her receive her Master's degree in Theatre for Development from the King Alfred's College in the United Kingdom in 2002 while she also attained a Diploma in Conflict Management from Lewsham College in London in 1999.

Although her presence will not be here physically, she has left behind an iconic legacy which will not be forgotten.

Peace in power, Ma Nkonyeni.
