The series' lead actress Pearl Thusi, has taken to social media to open up about its cancelation. This follows after viewers continue to give the series a thumbs up after watching binge-watching it.
While Pearl has accepted that her show will never be renewed, she is grateful that people enjoy it so much. “It’s wild that I’ve never seen all this amazing feedback on #QueenSono from all over the world… I’ve made peace with it not being renewed but reading this also made me quite sad. But I’m so happy we entertained so many people worldwide,” Pearl Thusi tweeted. Here is how Tweeps reacted to Pearl's tweet.
Queen Sono got canned in late 2020 due to production challenges that arose due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with season 2 of Queen Sono. We are incredibly proud of the Diprente team for sharing their audacious vision and bringing it to life with Netlflix. A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series. Netflix is also grateful to the amazing efforts shown by the cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world. We’ll continue to work closely with South Africa’s creative industry to keep producing more compelling ‘Made-in-South Africa’ stories.” said a Netflix Spokesperson.
Pearl paid tribute to the cast and crew of the show for their amazing work. “It’s so incredible that we as a team got a lifetime opportunity to make history together as there will never be another ‘first’ African Netflix Original Series. I’m proud of the work we did, but everything happens for a reason. I am excited about what the future holds.” said Pearl.
Even though Queen Sono got canceled, the actress revealed she still received her paycheck. Pearl said: “When they said Queen Sono is cancelled, I moped for like three days but we got together, had the conversation we needed to have and they gave me my cancellation fee.”
