There was a large outcry from his biggest fans after SABC took strict measures against the controversial radio presenter after he was alleged to have shared homophobic thoughts during his breakfast show, Phat Joe and the Family. Majota Khambule, the DJ’s real name, was commenting on another celebrity who was in hot water for her own homophobic commentary: Zodwa Wabantu.
Zodwa was trending after claiming that gay men wanted to be women and suggesting that they need to be grateful that women gave them the space to exist; something which many LGBT members did not take kindly to. When giving his opinion on the matter, Phat Joe offended even more people when he reportedly said he didn’t ” understand why gays can’t accept that it’s difficult for most people to accept their lifestyle.” He also described gay men who hit on him as “disgusting” and let’s just say these comments didn’t go down well.
Although the SABC didn’t say too much on the matter, his suspension was confirmed when their spokesperson, Vuyo Mthembu, said “The SABC can confirm that Phat Joe has been unscheduled until further notice. This is a matter between the employer and employee, and we cannot comment further at this stage.”
However, after two weeks of Phat-Joe-less mornings, the famed presenter made his grand return on Monday and fans were thrilled to hear their favorite voice back on the air.
Upon his return, the presenter took a moment to issue an apology to everybody he had offended but let’s just say, not many people were convinced by his tone:
