The news of Senzo Meyiwa's death is as sad as it is shocking. In the early hours of Sunday morning, SAPS confirmed that the Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper had died after being shot by intruders. As we've trawled the web for news, we've begun to learn of more disturbing details around the killing. Here's a brief summary of what we know so far
Senzo died protecting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo
It doesn't get much worse than this for Kelly Khumalo, who had to watch her boyfriend and the father of her young daughter die while protecting her. Intruders had broken into her Vosloorus home with the intention of walking away with her valuables. Police already confirmed this morning that an altercation had broken out between the intruders and Kelly/Senzo. It's being widely reported that the criminals were attempting to shoot Kelly before Senzo took a fatal bullet for his lover.
Senzo was killed over a cellphone
That's right; over a damn mobile phone. The "altercation" that the police confirmed to have taken place in Kelly Khumalo's home was over the criminal's demand of a mobile phone which they wanted to run away with after the initial break in. After Senzo and Kelly refused to hand the phone over, the intruders became violent and fired the shot that ended his life.
Police are at Kelly's house this morning
SAPS have confirmed that there is a R150,000 reward for anybody who can provide reliable information on the gunmen's whereabouts and identities. This picture was loaded on singer Kelly Khumalo's Instagram account, hours before he was killed.
In the mean time, the police continue to investigate Kelly Khumalo's home in Vosloorus to continue investigations and gather up what evidence they can.
We will be updating you throughout the day as details on this tragic story continue to emerge. Our hearts go out to Senzo Meyiwa's friends, team mates and family; as well as, of course, to his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo. One can only imagine what she's going through this morning.
