It’s that time of the year again where we will be witnessing some of South Africa’s talented commercial artists compete to become winners at the Metro FM Music Awards.

I really have no idea what criteria is used when selecting award nominees in the different categories at a lot of the music ceremonies. Take, for instance, the Grammies a few weeks ago, It always seems as if we are given the choices we see as nominees and never have much of a say as to who is nominated.  It almost seems like the award ceremonies belong to the creators and we are just spectators and. It all looks very strategic and planned. Or maybe it’s just me; maybe I missed the call requesting all citizens to give their opinion.

I like the Metro awards because fans get to vote for their favourite musicians. They are also, in a way a recap of what has been happening in the local music scene with regards to the success of our favourite and sometimes not so favourite artists.  I came across a list of the categories and official nominees the other day and I have to say that it is indeed a reflection of what I have been seeing on television and hearing on radio. I’m not surprised by any of the names, even when I see legends like Thebe and Trompies in the Best Kwaito Album category.

I am looking forward to the Best Male Album, Best Hip Hop Album and Best Hit Single categories, which all include Cassper Nyovest, AKA and KO as nominees. With these three artists nominated (in some cases against each other) these categories, it sure will keep the hip hop scene abuzz as all three artists were ranked in the top 3 on MTV Base’s Top 10 Hottest South African MC’s.

Prizes are up for grabs in several different genres, some of the categories include, Best African Pop Album, Best Urban Jazz Album and Best Jazz album just to name a few.

The 14th annual Metro FM Awards will be held this coming Saturday at Durban’s prestigious Inkosi Albert Luthuli Conference Centre (ICC) in Durban.

ZAlebs also previewed the red carpet here, with the help of fashion designer, Francois Louw.
