Come 9 August 2017, a number of South African women will be making their way to Monte Casino for the makeup masterclass of the year with one of the world's foremost makeup artists, Hrush Achemyan (pronounced Hee-roosh).

Hrush Achemyan

Born Hranush Alexis "Hrush" Achemyan, the Armenian-American self-taught makeup artist, entrepreneur and beauty influencer began doing makeup as a hobby and has done a stellar job of turning it into a global empire.

In addition to working with the Kardashian and Jenner sisters, she has worked with the likes of Giuliana Rancic, Cassie, Leona Lewis, Karrueche Tran and more.

Her years in the industry have seen her develop impressive techniques (some of which are inspired by oil-painting techniques) and she is now recognized as one of the top master makeup educators worldwide.

The event is set to be hosted by Bonang Matheba and promises the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Hrush, a photo op with her, drinks and snacks, a gift bag after the event and a certificate of attendance at the end of the day in addition to a number of other attractions.

We recently got the coveted opportunity to chat to Hrush and she shared some gems for the ZAlebs family:

1. What do you think the most underrated make-up secret/tip is?

The most underrated secret/tip is healthy skin. It’s so important to have good skin for makeup to look flawless.

2. Besides cleanse, tone and moisturize, what other basic skin care would you recommend? (regular facials, etc.)

HydraFacials are your best friend! It basically infuses hydration into your skin and removes all the gunk without damaging the surface. It ensures that your pores stay clean. I like to do a HydraFacial once a month, especially before an event.  You’ll look like a glowing goddess.

3. Besides the well-known makeup don’ts, what is one thing you would say people should NEVER do when it comes to makeup?

People should never over apply!  Less is definitely more! It always looks messy and I find that the more product you apply on your face, the more separated the makeup is instead of a clean, blended look.

4. Are there any old makeup trends you would ever want to revive?

The Kevyn Aucoin era of lashes: a separated, fluttery lash!

 5. Any advice on how the everyday consumer can differentiate quality makeup tools (brushes, sponges, etc.) from the stuff that won't work well or last?

I like to stick to reputable brands.  It doesn’t matter what the price is.  My makeup kit consists of a range of brands: drugstore to high-end.
