SAFTA's fashion

Colour, fit and accessories, should you get them wrong, can ruin an otherwise perfect red carpet look, and - seriously - looking like a Disney princess on the red carpet, or any formal do, is the fastest way to make yourself look cheap.

Here's a quick look at some of the hits and misses on the red carpet at the SAFTA Awards held at Sun City.

Hit: Bonang Matheba

must see looks

On any gown, embellishments should never look like they've been stuck on with a glue gun, or else we are left to assume that you are rocking your daughter's pre-school art project. Not a look! They should also never look like they are jewellery, because they are not! They should look like they are part of the dress, because isn't that the point? It's insane how often local celebrities often get this wrong, but it also has to do with picking the wrong designer. Fortunately for Bonang, that form-fitting sheer number by Warrick Gautier is an excellent example of how an embellished dress should look.

Miss: Busi Mtshali

must see looks

While claiming that Busi was anywhere near a "worst dressed" would be a gross exaggeration, she got two things quite wrong with that bright look. Bright colours are generally difficult to pull off at night, and unfortunately, those embellishments kind of did look like they could fall off quite easily. Other than that, the colours worked well with her skin tone and, of course, the hair, but maybe it was just the wrong event

Hit: Thembisa Mdoda

must see looks

Simplicity is often quite key, and I thought Thembisa got this right with a clean look. Her neck piece is just right as it doesn't distract from the dress itself, while adding a sparkle to the overall look.

Miss: Thando Thabethe

must see looks

One of the best pieces of style advise as far as accessorizing is concerned is that you should take off the last thing you put on, but for Thando, I feel like that dress would have been better off with accessories that would make her whole look pop, because the dress itself is quite dull and unexciting, but not so bad that it can't be salvaged through better styling.

Other celebrities I thought looked great include Bonnie Mbuli, and Blue Mbombo, among others. Noluthando Meje could have asked her designer to make the dress fit better (something looks amiss on that waistline), and I'm not entirely sure what was going on with Masechaba Ndlovu's look at all.
