With the Vodacom Durban July just around the corner, East Coast Radio’s Anisa Ussuph asked vintage connoisseur and local designer Carol Clark from Carol Clark & Friends for tips on how to get that vintage look for the big day.
1. It is best to ease yourself into this new world by wearing vintage accessories like scarves, hats, jewellery, handbags, or belts. However, only choose one accessory at a time as – with all things – less is more. Your unique vintage accessory will stand out even more if it isn’t competing with a cluster of other baubles.
2. You are not on a vintage movie set so ensure you are not “vintage” from head to toe. Team up your 60s hat and 50s blouse with a modern pair of pants (think contemporary sleek) and a great modern clutch. Decades can merge to create a great outfit. The trick is to keep your outfit balanced with 50/50 vintage and basic modern pieces.
3. Add zest to your outfit with a vintage hat or a recreated vintage hat which will be perfect for the July theme of re-use, recycle.
4. Vintage brooches are on trend this season. You can wear more than one clustered together if they are small enough. Big clip-on earrings add great effect to any outfit.
5. Mix and match fabrics and colours. No colour blocking here. Wear fluorescent tights with a mini lace skirt and a polka dot shirt for a striking combination that’s fun and fabulous.
6. Accessorise your race day outfit with a fascinator, vintage gloves or vintage bag.
7. As is true with any trend or style, it is best to stay true to what you are most comfortable in and what looks best on you.
Have fun and enjoy being YOU!
