Akure in Ondo State will host the South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge on May 16 and 17, with 12 teams drawn from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti set to compete at Democracy Park, Oja Oba.

The tournament—branded the Asiwaju Renewed Hope South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge—will take place at Democracy Park, Oja Oba, Akure, as teams from across the South West look to make an impact over the two-day programme.

Why the 3×3 format and what teams stand to gain

Olumide Oyedeji, the South West representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, spoke ahead of the competition sponsored by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighting the opportunity it offers local players to experience high-level competition.

On the decision to stage the event in the 3×3 style, Oyedeji explained that the format has become a global trend and said it is now time for the zone to embrace it, while also identifying and developing talent within the region.

  • Each team will also receive a transportation subsidy.

Oyedeji expressed gratitude to the minister for his backing and pledged that the event will be more than just basketball, with fans promised top-tier entertainment throughout the two days.

He added that the tournament is intended to serve as a meeting point for basketball stakeholders across the South West, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie alongside the on-court action.
