Barcelona extend Hansi Flick contract through 2028 after LaLiga title

Sports

Barcelona have moved to secure their future by extending head coach Hansi Flick’s deal until June 2028, with an additional year available as an option. The club confirmed the update on Monday after the German tactician delivered a 29th LaLiga crown.

The 61-year-old’s previous contract was due to end in June 2027, making this a clear vote of confidence in the project he has overseen at Camp Nou.

Barca wrapped up the league title with three matches still to play, clinching it on May 10 with a victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Quick facts

  • Barcelona have extended Hansi Flick’s contract through June 2028.
  • The new deal includes an option to extend for a further season.
  • Flick previously had a contract scheduled to run until June 2027.
  • Barca won LaLiga for a record 29th time.
  • The title was sealed with three games to spare via a May 10 win over Real Madrid.
  • Flick joined Barcelona in 2024 on a two-year contract.
  • His appointment followed his sacking by Germany in September 2023.

A treble-winning coach during his time with Bayern Munich, Flick arrived at Barcelona in 2024 on a two-year agreement. His appointment came as he sought to re-establish his standing after being dismissed by Germany in September 2023.

Since taking charge, Barcelona have quickly restored their domestic authority, winning consecutive LaLiga titles. They also added the 2024-25 Copa del Rey and followed that with successive Spanish Super Cups under his watch.

Despite that success at home, Barca’s European run ended in the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, where Atletico Madrid knocked them out. With that disappointment behind them, the club will now be aiming to raise their level in Europe next season’s top club competition.
