Bernardo Silva Completes Two-Year Move to Real Madrid After City Exit

Sports

Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva has agreed to join Real Madrid on a two-year contract, bringing the 31-year-old into a squad looking to bounce back from a difficult spell in Spain and Europe.

Silva leaves Manchester City after nine seasons of winning, with his deal having run out at the close of last campaign.

Real Madrid said the move is now in place, stating that the club and Silva have reached an understanding for him to represent Madrid for the next two seasons, running until June 30, 2028.

The playmaker, capped 109 times by Portugal, is currently on international duty at his third World Cup.

Across his time at City, Silva made 459 appearances and scored 76 goals after arriving from Monaco in 2017. During his Monaco spell, he lifted the Ligue 1 title, sharing the success with France captain and current Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé.

At Manchester City, Silva collected 20 major trophies, including four consecutive Premier League titles from 2021 to 2024, among six overall league and cup triumphs. He also featured in City sides that won the Champions League and completed the treble in 2023, while contributing to the 2019 group that achieved a domestic treble.

Real Madrid’s recent situation and summer moves

For Madrid, the past year has brought a different storyline, as results have lagged behind expectations.

  1. Last season, Real finished eight points behind La Liga winners Barcelona.
  2. Madrid were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals.
  3. After failing to secure a major trophy for two straight seasons, newly re-elected club president Florentino Pérez appointed Jose Mourinho as head coach earlier in June.
  4. On Monday, Madrid announced the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for a reported fee of 55 million euros (around $63.8 million).
  5. Madrid are also expected to add Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté once his contract at Anfield ends.
  6. In addition, the club has been linked with Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.
  7. This week, German defender Antonio Rüdiger agreed a contract extension with Real that runs until 2027.
