Marcello Anyanwu, the Head Scout and Technical Assistant at Dubai-based Gulf United FC, has thrown his support behind the appointment of Andres Iniesta as the club’s head coach, calling it a pivotal move that could speed up the Eagles’ progress.
Anyanwu, who has worked within Gulf United’s recruitment set-up for several years, said he has helped oversee a pipeline that has brought more than ten Nigerian players to the club across the last four seasons. He believes Iniesta’s tactical awareness, along with his experience at the highest level of the sport, makes him a strong match for the role.
“Andres Iniesta is one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. I was able to get a close look at him during his spell in the UAE, and what really stood out was his deep understanding of the game, his leadership, and the professionalism he brings every day,” Anyanwu said. “I’m convinced Gulf United FC will gain a great deal from his experience and football knowledge. This appointment is a major lift for everyone involved with the club.”
Club structure and player profile
Dubbed “The Eagles,” Gulf United has built a broad pathway for player development, with academy teams ranging from Under-6 through to Under-23. The set-up also includes both a B Team and a First Team, and the club runs a residential programme backed by modern training facilities.
At present, Gulf United’s squads include players from more than 25 nationalities, reflecting the club’s international recruitment and development approach.
“Gulf United is genuinely the People’s Club, and with a football icon like Iniesta guiding the project, I expect the road ahead to look very promising,” Anyanwu added. “We’re all looking forward to what’s coming next.”
