Ikoyi Club 1938 Set for 2026 Zenith Bank Inter-School Swimming Gala

The celebrated Swimming Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 is set to be buzzing today, with the venue hosting the 2026 Zenith Bank Inter-School Swimming Gala.

9th edition of Nigeria’s top youth meet

Entering its ninth year, the event has grown into a leading developmental platform for young swimmers, widely seen as Nigeria’s most important grassroots battleground in the sport. Organisers are expecting a standout edition, with an electric atmosphere, record-shattering potential, and standout displays from the country’s brightest up-and-coming talents in the pool.

Schools, events and age-group structure

About 20 primary and secondary schools are preparing to take part in the “catch-them-young” tournament—an initiative that has become central to identifying and nurturing the next generation of Nigerian Olympic hopefuls.

  • Races will feature major swimming disciplines, including Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Butterfly, and Individual Medley.
  • To keep competition balanced and intense, events will be arranged strictly by age categories.
  • The programme will include contests across both primary school and secondary school divisions.

Ikoyi Club chairman backs venue and partnerships

Akinbulejo Onabolu, Chairman of the Swimming Section at Ikoyi Club 1938, said he is fully confident that the facility is ready to deliver a smooth and memorable experience for everyone involved. He pointed to an unusually high level of interest and registrations coming from schools across Lagos State and nearby areas.

  • Onabolu highlighted strong engagement from schools across Lagos State and surrounding locations.
  • He noted that the organising team has worked to ensure a seamless event for swimmers, schools, parents, and spectators.

In his remarks, Onabolu said it has always been a pleasure for the club to welcome young swimmers at Ikoyi Club and observe their growth in an environment that is competitive yet supportive.

He added that the gala offers more than just races: it helps build friendships, discipline, confidence, and valuable exposure for the young athletes—experiences he believes play a major role in their overall development.

Zenith Bank named as key supporter

Onabolu also underlined the importance of the partnership with Zenith Bank, praising the institution for its steady financial and structural backing of youth sport.
