England centre-back Harry Maguire said on Thursday that he felt “shocked and gutted” after being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Tuchel is due to announce his 26-man selection for the tournament in North America later today, having started contacting players the day before.
Maguire, who has been with Manchester United, was included in the England group during March and earned his first call-up under Tuchel. However, the 66-times capped defender has now confirmed that he will not be travelling to the World Cup.
The 33-year-old posted on social media: “I was confident I could (have) played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.
“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
Maguire has been a key figure for United since Michael Carrick took over at Old Trafford in January, contributing to the team’s push that saw them finish third in the Premier League.
