Players arrived from across Nigeria for the annual competition, which is staged to honor the legacy of the former president and to promote the message of healthy living. It is held every year as a celebration that combines sport with community values.

Commenting on the event, Abeokuta Golf Club captain Umar Bakare expressed satisfaction with the turnout. He described the competition as one of the biggest sporting events hosted annually by the club, and urged stronger government investment in sports infrastructure, arguing that better support for athletics can keep young people meaningfully engaged and help reduce social vices.
