The Nigeria Football Federation has sent messages of condolence and support to Rivers United players and officials who suffered minor injuries in a road accident while travelling to Anambra State for a President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture.
The incident took place as the Port Harcourt club made its way to Awka for the match against Nasarawa United, with the accident occurring along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
In a statement, the NFF said it learned of the crash with shock and noted that there were no deaths. The federation expressed empathy toward those hurt in the incident and urged prayers for a swift return to full fitness.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said: “The NFF received with shock the news of the road accident involving your players and officials around the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt while on the way to a President Federation Cup Round of 16 match in Awka, Anambra State. While we thank God that there were no fatalities, we empathise with those who sustained minor injuries in the accident and wish them quick recovery.”
Rivers United are set to take on Nasarawa United in Awka on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm. The winner of the tie will progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
