The National Sports Commission (NSC) has sent congratulations to Team Nigeria’s weightlifting squad following an impressive showing at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Ismailia, Egypt. Nigeria collected a total of 29 medals at the event.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko hailed the athletes for their determination and for representing the country with distinction on the continental stage.
“This result is a clear sign that Nigerian sport is heading in the right direction. Our athletes have continued to demonstrate courage, discipline, and excellence whenever they take part at the international level. Securing 29 medals at the African Championship is more than a win for weightlifting—it is a source of pride for the entire nation,” Dikko said.
In a similar vein, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade described Nigeria’s campaign as further evidence of the country’s expanding strength across multiple sports.
“The steadiness and dominance shown by our weightlifters in Egypt strongly point to the effort and preparation taking place behind the scenes,” Olopade said. “This milestone should motivate athletes around the country to trust that with dedication and the right support, Nigeria can keep its place as an African powerhouse and contend strongly on the world stage. We commend the athletes, coaches, and officials for raising the Nigerian flag high.”
Nigeria also concluded its participation on Saturday by adding five more medals, finishing the championship with a remarkable overall tally of 14 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze.
