Speaking while commemorating the former general’s 84th year, Obi joined other notable Nigerians in celebrating Abubakar and in observing the public presentation of books that document his life, public service, and contributions to Nigeria and Africa.
Obi described Abdulsalami as occupying a “unique place” in the nation’s history, emphasizing that his role came at a crucial stage in Nigeria’s development and political evolution.
Key praise: leadership during Nigeria’s democratic transition
In his address, Obi said Abdulsalami demonstrated uncommon courage, patriotism and selflessness by steering the country through a peaceful handover to democratic governance. He added that Abubakar’s actions helped establish the groundwork for the democratic framework Nigeria continues to build on.
- Obi credited Abubakar with guiding Nigeria through a peaceful transition to democratic governance.
- He said the former leader’s conduct contributed to the foundation of Nigeria’s ongoing democratic dispensation.
- Obi argued that leadership should be judged less by holding power and more by the lasting effect leaders have on people and institutions.
- He stressed that a life of national service should be paired with responsibility and a commitment to the common good.
Message of goodwill and call to service
Obi used the occasion to reiterate the idea that meaningful public leadership is defined by service rather than accumulation of authority. He also extended prayers for Abdulsalami’s continued wellbeing.
Obi concluded by thanking those present and blessing the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while asking Almighty God to grant the former head of state good health, wisdom, and strength so he can continue serving humanity and the nation.
“May Almighty God continue to grant him good health, wisdom and strength to keep serving humanity and our nation,” Obi said, adding: “Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
