The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has warned of scheduled power disruptions affecting parts of several states, including Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe, as well as Gazaoua in the Niger Republic. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah made the announcement in a statement on Saturday, pointing to planned maintenance work at a key node in the national grid.
The outage is expected to begin on Sunday and is linked to maintenance at the Kumbotos 330 kilovolt transmission substation. TCN said the work is intended to allow its contractor to continue an upgrade program focused on the 330kV bus II jumpers and to swap out existing 350mm² conductors for 800mm² lines.
TCN said the conductor replacement and jumper upgrades are aimed at strengthening the transmission network and improving overall power reliability. As a result, customers supplied by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, and the Yola Electricity Distribution Company are likely to experience interruptions in electricity service during the maintenance window.
In addition to supply curtailments across Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, TCN noted that Kano Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to take off power for onward distribution in those areas. It also said some parts of Jos Electricity Distribution Company and Yola Electricity Distribution Company will not be able to off-take electricity for distribution to customers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, as well as to locations including Azare in Bauchi State and Nguru in Yobe State, alongside Gazaoua in the Niger Republic.
