Nigeria and China have renewed their commitment to boosting co-operation in sport, with officials and cultural leaders coming together to celebrate the shared value of martial arts.<\/p>\n
The reaffirmation came in Abuja during \u201cThe Passion of Chinese Wushu (Martial Arts): Cultural Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition,\u201d an event attended by government officials, diplomats, sports administrators and cultural enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
Hosted at the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, the exhibition placed Chinese martial arts traditions at the forefront while underscoring the expanding relationship between the two countries. The programme also coincides with both nations marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the China-Africa Year dedicated to people-to-people exchanges.<\/p>\n
At the opening ceremony, Yang Jianxing, cultural counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, described Wushu as a key marker of China\u2019s traditional culture and a meaningful instrument for building understanding among peoples and across civilizations.<\/p>\n
Yang said cultural exchange functions as a vital bridge that supports dialogue, mutual learning and lasting friendship between countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWushu is not simply a sport; it is a cultural medium and a spiritual legacy,\u201d the Chinese representative said. \u201cIt carries forward the nation\u2019s enduring drive for self-improvement and highlights principles such as respect, moral integrity, harmony and peaceful coexistence.\u201d<\/p>\n
He further stressed that the core of martial arts is rooted in peacebuilding and personal growth rather than confrontation.<\/p>\n
Yang added that the Chinese character \u201cWu\u201d represents the prevention of violence and the promotion of harmony, reflecting the philosophical base of martial arts traditions that have developed over centuries.<\/p>\n
He said the true spirit of Wushu reaches beyond physical skills, extending to moral discipline, self-development and respect for others.<\/p>\n
From the flowing movements of Tai Chi to the fast, forceful actions of traditional boxing styles, Chinese martial arts were presented as an extension of a wider worldview\u2014one that values balance between people and nature and encourages respect for diversity.<\/p>\n
The event included a delegation from Beijing Sport University led by Professor Wu Dong, who delivered demonstrations, lectures and interactive sessions designed to introduce Nigerian audiences to both the practice and philosophy behind Chinese martial traditions.<\/p>\n
Yang said the exhibition was intended not only to showcase Chinese culture, but also to strengthen friendships\u2014especially among young people in both countries.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the timing of the event is especially significant, as it takes place during a landmark period in China-Nigeria relations.<\/p>\n
Over the last 55 years, bilateral engagement between China and Nigeria has grown across several areas, including commerce, infrastructure development, education, technology and culture.<\/p>\n
Yang noted that the relationship\u2019s momentum is supported not only by economic co-operation, but also by the friendship that exists between the peoples of both nations.<\/p>\n
He and his colleagues pledged that the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center will continue rolling out initiatives aimed at expanding co-operation in Chinese-language instruction, the arts and culture, tourism promotion, youth exchanges and sports collaboration.<\/p>\n
The goal, he said, is to deepen mutual understanding and contribute to what China describes as an \u201call-weather China-Africa community with a shared future.\u201d<\/p>\n
A goodwill message delivered on behalf of the Chairman of Nigeria\u2019s National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, also highlighted the increasing influence of sports diplomacy in strengthening ties between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Speaking through Musa Amodu, the Commission praised the exhibition as a celebration of sporting excellence as well as history, identity, philosophy and friendship.<\/p>\n
The Commission said that Wushu, like many traditional sports, reflects values such as discipline, courage, self-control and respect\u2014qualities that make it a powerful way to connect cultures.<\/p>\n
\u201cSports speaks a universal language,\u201d Amodu said. \u201cIt goes beyond borders, narrows differences and brings people together in ways that formal diplomacy sometimes cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that the future of Nigeria-China relations should be judged not just by trade figures, infrastructure projects and official agreements, but also by collaboration across sports, education, culture and youth engagement.<\/p>\n
The National Sports Commission also used the occasion to acknowledge China\u2019s support for sports development through training and capacity-building programmes.<\/p>\n
Musa disclosed that two technical officers from the Commission recently returned from a professional training programme in China. He said the course was organised by the Academy for International Business Officials under the Chinese government.<\/p>\n
The Commission expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for wider chances in areas including sports administration, coaching development, infrastructure management, sports science, anti-doping programmes and athlete development.<\/p>\n
It also proposed broader links covering sports technology, promotion of traditional sports, sports medicine, research and industry growth.<\/p>\n
In the Commission\u2019s view, Nigeria\u2019s young population combined with China\u2019s extensive experience in sports administration can create partnerships that benefit both sides.<\/p>\n
The Commission pledged to further engage with Chinese institutions, including the Chinese Embassy, the China Cultural Center and Beijing Sport University.<\/p>\n
Another speaker at the event, Mohammed Bulama, representing the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, praised the Chinese Embassy for using culture as a platform to strengthen international friendship.<\/p>\n
Bulama described the exhibition as a reflection of China\u2019s deep cultural heritage and its dedication to advancing dialogue between cultures.<\/p>\n
He highlighted the broadcaster\u2019s collaboration with the Chinese Embassy through the \u201cNi Hao\u201d programme, which airs nationwide and focuses on Chinese language, culture, tourism, education, sports and bilateral relations.<\/p>\n
According to Bulama, the programme is broadcast twice each week across FRCN\u2019s national network, which includes more than 42 FM stations as well as multiple regional broadcasting platforms that reach communities throughout Nigeria.<\/p>\n
He said the partnership has increased public awareness of Chinese culture, while also enriching FRCN\u2019s programming and broadening cultural perspectives for Nigerian audiences.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the years, this collaboration has offered an invaluable platform to highlight China\u2019s culture, tourism, innovation and development achievements to Nigerians, while fostering deeper understanding of the long-standing friendship between our countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The broadcaster reaffirmed FRCN\u2019s intention to continue sustaining and deepening co-operation with the Chinese mission through media engagement and cultural programming.<\/p>\n
As martial arts demonstrations drew attention, speakers repeatedly emphasized how culture and sport serve as bridges that connect nations beyond formal diplomatic channels.<\/p>\n
They said events such as the Wushu exhibition allow countries to interact at the level of people, values and shared goals\u2014helping to build stronger foundations for long-term friendship.<\/p>\n
