Five young players from across Africa have been identified as leading contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Young Player Award after starring as their teams pushed into the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n
In the most recent tournament review released on Tuesday, FIFA spotlighted 11 standout individuals born on or after January 1, 2005, noting that their performances have strengthened their cases for the prestigious personal prize.<\/p>\n
African representation makes up nearly half of the nominees, a sign of the continent\u2019s rising clout as the World Cup expands to a 48-team format.<\/p>\n
Among the African youngsters highlighted were five names:<\/p>\n
C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire pair Yan Diomande and Christ Inao Oulai.<\/p>\n
Diomande has been one of the breakthrough attractions of the competition. The 19-year-old RB Leipzig forward set up a goal in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s 2-0 win over Cura\u00e7ao and also became the only player born this century to both complete 10 dribbles and create 10 scoring opportunities across his opening three World Cup appearances.<\/p>\n
His C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire teammate, Christ Inao Oulai, earned similar recognition for his impact in midfield, playing a crucial role as the Elephants advanced into the Round of 32.<\/p>\n
Maza also landed on FIFA\u2019s shortlist after appearing in all three of Algeria\u2019s group matches. The youngster was voted the Player of the Match in Algeria\u2019s win over Jordan, a result that confirmed their progression to the knockout stage.<\/p>\n
Bouaddi impressed as well, with his calm decision-making and composure in the middle of the pitch. The 18-year-old helped the Atlas Lions secure qualification, then produced another steady showing in the Round of 32 against the Netherlands, recording two shots during his 79 minutes on the field.<\/p>\n
Mbaye completes the list of African contenders. Earlier in the tournament, he made history by becoming the youngest African player to score at a FIFA World Cup, striking against France at 18 years old and 143 days.<\/p>\n
