Cape Verde will arrive at Hard Rock Stadium as World Cup debutants who have already rewritten the history books. The archipelago, home to just over 500,000 people, produced a goalless draw with Spain, followed it with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay\u2014former champions and twice winners of the tournament\u2014and then secured a 0-0 stalemate with Saudi Arabia in Houston. Those results left them second in Group H, finishing the group phase unbeaten.<\/p>\n
They are also the smallest country by population to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup. Key to that achievement has been goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, while forwards Helio Varela and Kevin Pina head the scoring charts for Cape Verde with one goal each, highlighting a tournament campaign rooted in defensive organisation and resilience.<\/p>\n
Argentina, meanwhile, approach the knockout stage in strong momentum, having won each of their group matches. They beat Jordan 3-1 and then overcame Algeria 3-0, scoring ten goals while conceding just three across the qualifying and tournament phase. At the top of the scoring charts, Lionel Messi has six goals, tied with France\u2019s Kylian Mbapp\u00e9.<\/p>\n
With that in mind, Cape Verde are expected to adopt a compact, low-block approach, defending with numbers and looking to strike through set pieces or counter-attacks as they take on Lionel Scaloni\u2019s side.<\/p>\n
Fernandes, who was born in Cape Verde before moving to Switzerland at the age of five, said he views the Cape Verde Football Federation as an example of how to overcome persistent logistical and infrastructure difficulties across the islands.<\/p>\n
He also credited FIFA\u2019s structural and financial support for enabling the federation\u2019s progress, arguing it has helped ensure competitions can be staged, players gain more opportunities to perform at high levels, and expertise is passed on to referees as well as team managers.<\/p>\n
Fernandes further explained that the Cape Verde FA has made strategic use of the FIFA Forward programme, using it to finance 17 development projects focused on strengthening national-team performance and expanding infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Fernandes, who joined FIFA in August 2022, said the current expanded World Cup cycle involving 48 teams is already meaningful for African football. He highlighted that Cape Verde, DR Congo and South Africa have all reached the knockout stages.<\/p>\n
