Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has thrown its weight behind the overhaul reshaping Nigeria\u2019s sports landscape under National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko, calling it a significant move toward creating a durable sports economy.<\/p>\n
The university\u2019s approval was delivered during a weekend courtesy visit to the NSC, led by ABU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed.<\/p>\n
Ahmed described Dikko, an ABU graduate, as a forward-thinking sports administrator, saying his appointment has brought genuine pride to the university community. He also commended Dikko\u2019s efforts to reposition sport as a growth engine\u2014one that can generate employment, draw investment, and contribute to wider national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past 20-plus years, we have seen you provide purposeful leadership across multiple areas of the sports industry. Your path continues to motivate our students and shows what an ABU alumnus can accomplish through ability, honesty, and commitment to serving the nation,\u201d Ahmed said.<\/p>\n
The vice-chancellor pointed to ABU\u2019s long-standing role in advancing Nigerian sport, noting that the institution has produced both high-level athletes and sports administrators during the last four decades. He further reiterated ABU\u2019s dedication to working with the NSC, citing its selection as one of Nigeria\u2019s six sports centres of excellence and its successful bid to stage the 2028 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games.<\/p>\n
Ahmed said the university regards both achievements as responsibilities to the wider country and pledged continued cooperation with the commission on initiatives that align with Dikko\u2019s plan for a modern, professionally managed sports sector. He added that nurturing top-tier sports administrators, governance specialists, and business professionals would be just as vital to the future of Nigerian sport as producing champions on the pitch.<\/p>\n
In his response, Dikko thanked the vice-chancellor and the delegation for the visit and for their support of the commission\u2019s reform agenda. He promised a renewed partnership to strengthen sport and widen opportunities across the industry.<\/p>\n
