Nigeria\u2019s senior track and field team have been urged to raise their game as the 24th edition of the Senior African Athletics Championships begins in Accra, with Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) second vice president Akuchukwu Aghazu expressing confidence that Team Nigeria is ready for the continental showpiece.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the athletes ahead of the competition, Aghazu called on the Nigerian contingent to stay sharp and work as one throughout the meet.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe in your abilities and we recognise the sacrifices you have made to reach this level. Go out there and make Nigeria proud. Compete with courage, discipline and the mindset of champions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Aghazu also singled out the foreign-based athletes who have travelled to Ghana to represent the country, praising their commitment as a major boost for the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo our foreign-based athletes, we appreciate your dedication and your readiness to answer the national call despite your busy schedules abroad. Your presence here reflects your love for Nigeria and your commitment to the nation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The AFN official further commended the National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, for placing the welfare of athletes and officials at the forefront in the build-up to the championships.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must commend the National Sports Commission under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Honourable Bukola Olopade for putting athletes\u2019 welfare first. The support provided to the team has been commendable and it highlights a renewed determination to grow Nigerian sports,\u201d Aghazu stated.<\/p>\n
She also acknowledged the role of the media in advancing athletics, noting that coverage and publicity help keep Nigerian athletes in the spotlight both on and off the track.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe media has continued to stand by Nigerian athletics through quality coverage and consistent publicity. We appreciate your efforts in sharing the stories of our athletes and presenting the sport in a positive light,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
