Arthur Okonkwo, a former Arsenal youth goalkeeper, has explained that his drive to lift trophies and to honour his heritage were central to his choice to change international allegiance from England to Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The stopper, who has only recently received his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles, said the prospect of representing Nigeria was a deeply proud and emotional moment for him and his family.<\/p>\n
In remarks to the Super Eagles media team, Okonkwo revealed that conversations about switching began last summer, sparked by meetings with members of the national team coaching staff.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be given the honour of playing for your country is a privilege,\u201d Okonkwo said. \u201cI\u2019m very excited and I can\u2019t wait for the opportunity. I\u2019ve been looking forward to this for some time, and to finally get the chance is something special.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that the coaching team\u2019s intentions were made clear early on. \u201cThe process started last summer after I spoke with the manager and the goalkeeping coach,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey told me they were interested in me, and the discussions were genuinely encouraging. From there, we\u2019ve been working on completing my switch from England to Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
Okonkwo, who has previously turned out for England at youth level, described how receiving the invitation to the Super Eagles camp sparked immediate excitement. \u201cWhen the call finally arrived, the goalkeeping coach was the first person to reach out to me and tell me I had been selected for the camp,\u201d he said. \u201cYou feel a wave of excitement straight away. The first two people I contacted were my dad and my mum.\u201d<\/p>\n
The goalkeeper stressed that his ambition extends beyond wearing the Nigeria shirt, with a desire to help deliver success for the national team. \u201cMy decision is driven by my wish to win trophies for my country,\u201d he stated. \u201cI understand how much people in Nigeria value football, and how important it is to them. Being able to contribute to that, both for my country and for my roots, would be extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Okonkwo\u2019s inclusion adds another layer of competition in Nigeria\u2019s goalkeeping ranks as the Super Eagles continue planning for upcoming qualification cycles and major tournaments.
