It is going to be a long week for Molemo Maarohanye, the embattled hip-hop star better known as Jub-Jub. By Friday he and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala will know if they are guilty of a serious car accident that killed four schoolchildren and critically injured two more. In total the pair face four counts of murder, two of attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
In comparison, having his dirty laundry aired is not nearly as nerve-wrecking. But Jub-Jub will certainly not be happy with former girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s book The Kelly Khumalo Story. Written by Melinda Ferguson, best known for her first book Smacked, it chronicles much of the 29-year old actress and singer’s life and fight with drugs. Ferguson’s own book was about her ordeal with narcotics and the two women attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings together.
But apparently quite a substantial number of pages talk about Khumalo’s rough relationship with Jub-Jub, whom she has a child with. At one point she details the events behind a series of shock photos that appeared in local tabloids, revealing a bruised and battered Khumalo.
Apparently it came about while Jub-Jub was visiting her and the child. During the stay he went into a jealous fit when he thought she was talking with another man on the phone.
“When he came back he tried to have sex with me and I refused,” she tells Ferguson. “I told him we had broken up, things were over between us. He refused to accept this and kept trying. I pushed him away and then all hell broke loose. He pushed me back.”
The pair started to punch each other and “next thing, he jumped on me and bit me in the face.”
Assault charges were filed by both parties – Jub-Jub claimed that Khumalo tried to run him over. The couple eventually dropped the charges.
The Kelly Khumalo Story also details other events in Khumalo’s life. She covers her break-up with Jub-Jub last October, the legal battle over the song Qinisela with Duma ka Ndlovu, and her affair with kwaito performer Speedy.
