Socialite and ex 3Sum band member Koyo Bala says that life has been good to him since he revealed his HIV positive status in 2011.
“Apart from a handful of people who thought that my decision to go public with my status was a publicity stunt, it’s been really good for me. I decided to reveal my status because it allowed me to be free with myself.”
Koyo’s says it’s empowering to be able to speak freely and openly about his status and enjoys it when people come to him for advice with regards to their HIV status.
Koyo believes that everyone should know their status like they know their shoe size.
“I think it’s sad that people are scared to know their status. It’s important that one goes and gets tested because then you will know exactly how to look after yourself. The nurses and doctors are able to guide you and support you through everything.”
Koyo believes that the misconception that HIV is a life sentence still exists. “It’s not a killer disease. Remember to have safe sex and always go and get yourself tested. Even if you are married, you still need to go for HIV testing.”
