When Playboy SA Playmate Imogene Meyer sent us her ‘Mo picture’ in an effort to spread the word about Movember, we just knew we had to get involved and help her spread the word!
So, with Imogene as our inspiration, we decided to approach some other inspirational celebrity women to find out if they wouldn’t mind us adding some big ol’ hairy moustaches to their pretty faces.
Enter Bailey, Dineo and Sureshnie! Find out what our lovely (albeit hairy) ladies had to say about Movember and why it’s a cause so close to their…uh…upper lips?!
Tell us a bit about how and why you decided to get involved with Movember?
The Movember initiative was started years ago and I was just very fortunate, this year, to have the capacity to speak out and actively be a part of the movement. I am a proud Mo-Sister!
What’s your take on Movember – should there be more initiatives about making men more aware of cancer?
This year’s campaign is Movember & Sons, so we’re trying to encourage the heritage of it. Obviously as a girl this doesn’t apply to me but by becoming Mo-Sisters, we as women can inspire our boyfriends, husbands, fathers, brothers and friends to be more aware and more proactive in fighting the battle against cancer.
In what other ways do you think women can support Movember… besides encouraging their male counterparts to grow their facial hair for an entire month!
We can speak out! Just as we fight against the e-tolling system or shout in anger against abuse, we can do the same with the Mo. I truly feel women should go out of their way to be informed and educated about the illnesses men face. We need to constantly find ways to be more involved in the prevention, education and healing process for millions of men worldwide go through.
If you had to be bald or have permanent facial hair…which would you choose and why?
I’d rather be bald than have facial hair because I could always hide the baldness with different styles of turbans. Facial hair you can’t hide…
What’s your take on Movember – should there be more initiatives about making men more aware of cancer?
Abso-freaking-lutely!!! Men need a more serious take on their health and need to be seen doing something about it at a time when it isn’t life threatening. There’s a lot more social awareness on women’s health issues. You barely ever see men gathering to discuss health issues.
In what ways do you think women can get more involved in Movember?
Women really need to have their male friends and family members educate themselves on health issues that could potentially affect them.
How have you been taking part in the Movember movement – besides allowing us to Photoshop a moustache onto your pretty face!
I wear my “Movember” necklace all month long in support of the movement.
Do you think you’d ever trust yourself to shave off a man’s’ moustache?
I’m generally very careful so I think I’d be able to do a great job… As long as they don’t move! (Laughs)
Do you think South Africa as a whole is doing its utmost in promoting cancer awareness?
It’s scary to realise just how many people are affected by cancer in one way or another. I definitely think South African’s are aware but, as with anything, there is always more that can be done.
As a Mo-Sister, what does Movember mean to you?
Having lost family members to cancer and knowing some who are warriors, battling with the disease, Movember is extremely special to me. My husband participated in it last year and it was just a brilliant cause to be a part of.
What type of facial hair do you prefer on a man – moustache, goatee or beard?
I like them clean shaven! I think I went through a goatee phase, but I always knew that the man I’d date would be bald and definitely clean shaven. So I got very lucky with Leigh, my husband.
Do you have any family or friends who’ve been affected by cancer?
Yes, Leigh’s aunt’s husband unfortunately lost the battle to lung cancer and our aunty Jen currently lives with cancer. The story of their lives is so powerful and inspiring. Every day she gets stronger, and every day we are more thankful for every breath she takes.
