Durbanite Shelley Buckle is set to fly our country’s flag high at the Miss Deaf World pageant in the Czech Republic.
The 22-year-old graphic designer jets out of the country on Saturday.
Shelley, who is part of the East Coast Radio family, scooped the Miss Deaf South Africa title in October last year and will be competing against 50 contestants from around the world for the crown.
“I am very excited. I am nervous as well, of course, but ja – I’ll just give it my best and I’ll see what comes out of it,” she said.
Shelley says the contestants will be put through their paces in the coming days as they prepare for the two-hour pageant next Saturday. She says she’s had loads of support from home.
“My family, my friends, my boyfriend. Everyone here has just been so supportive. Mrs Africa has been training me and teaching me a lot of pageant tips and giving me advice for when I go overseas.”
