Have you learned anything from Edward in terms of being chivalrous to women? Maybe you didn’t open doors for women before and you do now…
I just always thought that was kind of normal. I’m not trying to be arrogant or anything. When you overdo all that stuff, it’s almost not chivalrous anymore. If you’re always opening the door or something, it’s like ‘Jesus, stop opening the door – what’s wrong!’ I don’t know. I found out where the line is, where the annoying line is with Edward I think…
If you don’t ever find another project as crazy as this, the teenagers after you, all the paparazzi following you, will you miss it?
I mean, who knows? I always think if this happened 12 years ago, pre-camera phones, and pre- TMZ, it would be the greatest thing ever! That is a free pass! (laughs) You look at DiCaprio after Titanic. There weren’t many of them following him around. He could do anything. He was hanging out with the Wu-Tang Clan and stuff. It was the coolest thing in the world. But becoming quite big now, you become insanely conservative -just terrified about everything. You look at Christian Bale and stuff. You do the Google search thing. I bet you ‘Christian Bale Batman’, ‘Christian Bale rant’ is probably second. And it’s like: ‘Why is that remembered?’ It’s so weird.
What has been your weirdest encounter with a fan?
Probably the weirdest ones are when I make a fool out of myself. I’ve gone up to a bunch of people who I thought were taking a picture and they actually weren’t. I started fights with them and stuff (laughs). They’re not really fans I guess. (laughs)
So what next? You said in Cannes you will probably do another movie with David Cronenberg?
Yes, hopefully. One of the scripts I’ve been looking at looks really good. It’s about child stars in Hollywood. It’s really funny, but incredibly, incredibly dark, like crazy dark. I don’t know when that’s going to shoot and I’ve got to do a few more things before then I think. But literally he could just call me up and I would do anything.
We hear that you really love music…would you consider it as a career?
Yes, but it’s like anything. You want people to think you’re good at it, otherwise it’s not fun. It’s a strange thing, once you’re big… If I went into music now, there’d be more people who wouldn’t like my stuff and would want to be vocal about it. Because they’d feel like it was being pushed in their face. So with acting now, I know there’s a bunch of Twilight fans who really do support the other movies that I do. And so I kind of want to stay in that realm for a bit. And also if I stop acting, I want people to remember my stuff as being interesting and having made interesting decisions after you get given your break.
You could do theatre?
Completely yes. I really want to. I’ve been looking at a bunch of theatre stuff. It’s scary though. I’ve got a quiet voice. I did a play when I was 18 and I got fired because my voice was too quiet…
