Kuli Roberts appears on the cover of Real Magazine’s December issue.
Known for her very candid opinions and what some might call a ‘loud mouth’, Kuli has made quite a name for herself in the media.
Kuli’s media career launched after she graduated from UCT with a degree in politics and history. She volunteered to work as an assistant to Willie Hofmeyr and his wife who were in the media department of the ANC pre-democracy.
In 2011 Kuli sparked outrage when she made headlines around her controversial column about coloured people. “I did not intend to harm anyone nor was I being racist in any way,” she says. “I was writing about coloured women in Cape Town. Was I not supposed to say their race?”
After the column was discontinued and her work reduced, the single mother of two found herself in a downward spiral of misery and alcohol. “I used to drown my sorrows in alcohol because of all the drama that was happening in my life,” she says.
Having landed a co-hosting gig on Kaya FM’s morning drive show with Bob Mabena in September, Kuli expresses how radio is her newfound love.
Nowadays, Kuli enjoys the small moments in life like spending time with her kids, painting, gardening and what she tags ‘a bohemian kind of lifestyle’ with her 11 cats and 11 dogs.
