Several Afrikaans artists have signed a pledge to be ambassadors of the campaign against farm murders.
Several Afrikaans artists signed a memorandum at the launch of AfriForum’s “Stop farm murders” campaign on Tuesday evening in Brooklyn.
AfriForum also launched its 12 projects that will form part of the central plan, focussing on how to address the killing of farmers.
Six farm attacks and two farm murders took place the past three weeks.
Attie Potgieter, his wife Wilna and their two-year-old daughter Willemien were murdered on their farm in Lindley, December 2010.
”They took her to a little room and they executed her. There was a box in that room and that was filled much with the blood of the 2-year old,” the family told the producer of the documentary War of the Flea that was also launched on Tuesday.
Producer Rian van der Walt conducted interviews with several family members of the victims of the farm attack.
Grandmother Bokkie said: “I miss them….”
Van der Walt aims to get South Africans emotionally involved with this project after they have seen this documentary.
There is a downward trend in the amount of farm murders in the country according the Institute for Security Studies.
ISS’s Johan Burger said one must put it in context and remember that the figures are still extremely high compared to the ratio of South Africans being killed in general.
Although there is no proof that the country’s farm murder rate could directly be linked to genocide, Burger said at the end of the day it has the same impact on this specific ethnic group.
