Bruno Mars' second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox was one of the most enjoyable albums of the year. Featuring smash hits such as Locked out of Heaven, Tresure and When I was your man the album was an easy inclusion in our top 5 albums of the year. Let's find out why, from our managing editor, Charis Apelgren.
Bruno Mars, Unorthodox Jukebox
If the mere mention of sex makes you cringe or turn all shades of red, you may need to skip over a few of most of the tracks on Unorthodox Jukebox.
Unorthodox: Breaking with convention or tradition, contrary to what is usual. This describes Bruno Mars: his voice, his sex appeal and his latest album.
When a man sings about making love like a gorilla then sings about how he plans to get back Natalie (I really feel sorry for her by the way) then goes seriously old school with If I knew, you know you have someone who is talented. His tongue-in-cheek lyrical approach is definitely successful.
Unorthodox Jukebox is the second studio album by American recording artist Bruno Mars. Bruno Mars is extremely talented - we've known this since he popped up with Billionaire and Nothing On You.
He is Keith Sweat, R Kelly and Michael Jackson under one roof. In a nutshell, Bruno sings about love and heartbreak, but he does it so well that one cannot and will not get tired of listening to his music.
Treasure is initially why I wanted this album, after hearing it a few times on the radio.Treasure is a track that will get the whole family together. It will remind older listeners of music from their youth, while their grandkids groove to it, too.
Which other songs on Unorthodox Jukebox are the standouts? All. This album can be described like a a date with someone who you instantly connect with and the chemistry between you flows. Your heart beats fast, your palms begin to sweat, you blush every time the other person says something, the hair on your skin stands, you feel yourself begin to sweat and all you really want to do is rip the clothes off the person sitting across the table, and well, make love like a Gorrila leaving you with post-sex hair. Sadly you can’t because you need to control yourself and deal with the fact that for now you are Locked Out Of Heaven and in need of a cold shower.
If this sounds really dramatic, then I have succeeded in describing Bruno Mars. He is the king of dramatic. He has a way of drawing you in with his music and voice. While some artists will sing about ‘I feel it in the air, As I'm doing my hair’, we can count on Bruno Mars to dig deep and connect with real stories.
My pride, my ego, my needs and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes
When I Was Your Man is an emotional ballad in which Bruno Mars sings about losing his girl to another man just because he didn't treat her the right way.
Another track that cements Bruno as a man of many powerful words and someone who will make a mark in the music industry, is If I knew. There's no doubt that he can write a pleasant tune, and sing it with sweet sincerity.
Oh, baby please, let's leave the past behind us.
So that we can go where love will find us, yeah, will find us
I know most girls would leave me
But I know that you believe me
What did leave me a little concerned is how a man who can sing so beautifully and deeply about love, can sing so coldly about a woman.
In Natalie, he even contemplates killing his beloved ("I'd spend a lifetime in jail, I'll be smiling in my cell"), revealing an unpleasantness you'd rather he had kept to himself. However, with the infectious hooks and cheeky attitude, you are quick to forgive him for hating on Natalie.
While this is not an album to play in the car with the kids, it is a great mood setter for a weekend of romancing. Just don’t blame us nine months from now
