A tough week for women in Mzansi entertainment

We reflect on how one story has lead to the lambasting of women on social media.

The dust has not yet settled on the DJ Zinhle, AKA, and Bonang saga, as the insults and anger continued on Friday, almost a full day after Zinhle’s statement was released.

The pointing of fingers and verbal attacks have caused Twars aplenty – with many becoming borderline embarrassing. Team Bonang and Team Zinhle have been at each other’s throats, and, honestly, it’s a sad sight to see.

One facet that caught our attention was when people asked why Bonang was receiving the majority of the blame, especially considering that she has denied having any affair with AKA?

This saga reminds us of when Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie. Poor Jennifer was left with egg on her face, not because of Brad’s decision, but because of the public’s taunting. Why is it that the women in these situations always receive the wrong end of the stick when it comes to topics of affairs or cheating?

Zinhle, whom many believe to be the victim here, was even attacked.

“Yoh haai, uxakekile nawe Zinhle, don’t you have better things to do then explaining why you broke up with AKA?” a Facebook comment read.

We’d add more of the comments we've seen on social media, but that would be fueling a fire that has already burnt many.

Now, we're not saying that AKA deserved most of the abuse, but it was disheartening to see how most people, especially women, yanked and dragged each other on social media platforms because of what transpired.

The fighting did not stop there. Thickleeyonce was even attacked because of her body type during the height of this Twitter debate. Why?

The social media sphere can be a toxic environment at the best of times, and we think it is about time people learn from this. Why attack women solely? There are no winners in any situation like this, so why pick on a particular group or sex?

Sadly, this is likely to never stop, as keyboard warriors are able to fling their anger at people in an anonymous way. However, showing a little bit more respect goes a long way, and it would be advisable to steer clear of issues of this type on social media - as it never ends well.
