Bafana Bafana can still qualify for the 2014 world cup, after Ethiopia were docked three points and fined R60 000, for fielding a suspended player against Botswana.
After receiving 2 yellow cards in previous matches against South Africa and Botswana (The home fixture), Manyahile Beyene was suspended for the return fixture against The Zebras.
Although the penalty against Ethiopia is only 3 points, it leaves Bafana with a massive opportunity to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil next year, and coach Gordon Igesund is happy with the prospect. He said:
"The decision also gives us a second bite on the cherry, we now have to beat Botswana and hope Ethiopia loses or draws against Central African Republic. But I am very pleased with the outcome."
Three Horse Race in Bafana's Qualifying Group
The decision leaves Ethiopia with 10 points, instead of 13, although they still lead the group. South Africa are close behind on 8 points, with Botswana sitting on 7 Points. Central African Republic complete the group.
Bafana’s game against Botswana in September is now and absolute must win, while they also have to hope that Central African Republic can achieve any kind of result against Ethiopia. Botswana will be watching this fixture with an outside chance of qualifying themselves if results go their way.
The September qualifiers promise to be filled with excitement and suspense; you’d hate to be a coach on that day!
