He began his carrier as a stand up comedian with only seven people in the audience but today Skhumba is able to rake in a full house with his comedic punchlines and hilarious impersonations.
Comedian Skhumbuzo Hlophe (33) known as Skhumba is not only a comedian but a brand that is growing tremendously the entertainment industry.
Most people know him from being a part of the annual 99% Zulu Comedy show but now Skhumba has scored himself his first big role as an actor in the sitcom, Thandeka’s Diary on SABC 1, every Monday at half past seven.
Speaking with ZAlebs, Skhumba said being a stand up comedian has opened many doors for him.
“ I never thought one day I would be acting but look at me now, I am fast making my mark in sitcoms because I am all about the comedy. I play the character of Thandeka’s father, Bheki who is very irresponsible and has a huge family, the story line is about a township family, a father who is very hilarious and doesn’t play that father figure,” said Skhumba.
Skhumba said Mandla N. who is the executive producer of Thandeka’s Diary approached him two years ago but he never took him seriously.
“ He told me about his project that he was working on at that time but I never even cared about it, two years later I received his call while I was chilling with my friends at a car wash and from there I went for auditions and got the role,” said Skhumba.
Seeing how he is growing as a comedian makes him feel honoured especially when he thinks about the days when he first started as a stand up comedian.
“I have always liked comedy which is why I never gave up even when I performed for few people, I have grown and I continue to be well known and do my job which is to make people Laugh,” said Skhumba.
During an interview Skhumba kept on saying his jokes and explained that he likes seeing people happy and entertained.
The hilarious man also features on Bob Mabena’s show on Kaya FM on Friday and he has also acted on Mzansi Magic comedy, Taxi Ride.
Skhumba added that he is also working on his one man show called Skhumba Khuzeka which will take place in April at Gold Reef City.
